Charge of the plastic brigade

August 2nd, 2009 at 12:21 am

The supermarket down the road has a notice up. From Monday they are going to charge 5 cents a bag for plastic shopping bags. For the sake of the environment, of course - nothing to do with the bottom line.

Not that it makes any difference to me, I bring my own bag anyway. But I do wonder what the charity shops that ask people to give them their leftover bags will do.

I like that idea. I don't bring my own bags- but that would get me to do it pronto.

I figure that's what it will come to sooner or later. There is one grocery store I go to that gives 5 cent credit off your order for each reusable bag used. I like it!

Most of the supermarkets here will give you .05 off for each bag you bring in.

C'mon, now, all the heads of those big corporations have kids and just want to preserve the earth for them. You are too cynical. Smile

I've just started my own collection of reusable shopping bags, as for saving the earth for the corporate heads' children, I don't think they worry, they will have enough money to buy whatever they need. I am more worried about my own grandchildren and children. I too am very cynical, The corporations are huge unfeeling giants that regard the rest of us as disposable workers, like in a beehive. Over here they are working on destroying any possibility for universal healthcare, they do not care how many of us die as long as they make a profit for wallstreet.

That is the norm over here in SE Europe... any good plastic bags cost 25-35 stotinki (about 20 cents). They are good bags, though, and can be re-used over and over again. We have some woven bags that we like to use, however, which leads to savings. Yeah, it IS insurance for the environment (and the bottom line, of course).
