Habits

The sales start today, so I avoided going into town as I knew I would be tempted to buy some bargains I don't need. Instead I went for a walk in the park. Unfortunately I came home by the supermarket and wound up buying 2 of my favorite Turkish bread rolls, even tho i have a fridge full of food at home. This makes me realise how much i have got into the habit of spending small amounts on impulse. I need to get back to budgeting and tracking expenses - and leaving my cash and debit card behind when I don't intend to spend.

Tracking expenses has made all the difference for me -- I've done it for years, now, and it's a deeply-ingrained habit. Makes me feel I'm in control.

Tina, I hope you had a lovely Christmas. Was/Is today a holiday in NZ?

Have you explored installing one of the free, expenses tracking systems like mint.com on computer? It really helps yo know exactly where the money goes, even those small treats like rolls, fresh from the bake shop. Just the fact that you'll need to enter yet another spend can be enough to squish the impulse to treat yourself. I was shocked at the 'leakage' totals my 1st two months. The whole point is to build the travel fund. I've noticed some people keep an elastic band on their CCs which I presume is a reminder, somewhat like string on a finger, to help keep them focussed on a goal.
