Saving change

December 23rd, 2014 at 07:04 am

I have this big jar, the kind bodybuilder protein supplements come in, and my intention is to fill it with all my change from today till next Christmas. This will not be easy, since i'm planning on cutting out all non-essential spending I won't be going shopping very often, so I shall beef it up by adding my $1 coins. I put $4.20 in it today, but as the house is now full of all sorts of goodies, I shouldn't need to buy anything until the end of the year. Wow, a whole week without spending anything, wonder if I can do it.

I'm confident you can manage many no spend days through to the end of the year. The stores will be crazy Tues & Wed., Thursday is Christmas celebration, Fri Boxing Day - is it your custom to visit with friends and neighbours? The weekend is a great time to devise casseroles, stews or concoctions to use up all those leftovers.

Since selling and moving is high on your priorities, the week to New Years is a good time to sort papers and reduce the volume. To help stretch no spend days, it helps to do groceries and fill the gas tank on the same day the mortgage clears or utilities paid.

When do you plan to return to India? Do you travel regularly? Having a giant coin jar helps keep you focussed n our goal with each addition

Great plan! And good luck on the no spending. It's a great time of year to just avoid the stores.

Super plan. We used to take change in a couple of times a year, but last summer, DH saw a couple take in a big jar of change that they had saved and he wanted to do the same. We don't have a big jar or jug so I'm just using pickle jars we have as we eat the contents. I don't spend a lot during the week (go to work, come home) and when I purchase groceries I put it on the credit card (and pay it off). But, any found change goes into the jars...I found 30 cents last week and when I was in our garage, I found a penny that must have come from DH's pocket when he pulled out his keys. Any change in the dryer, washer,(No, I'm not money laundering...) pockets, or on the floor instantly goes into the jar. DH does buy stuff and pays cash and I usually hit him up for his pennies when he gets a bunch.
